Grade 2* Listed 17th Century Gentry House

Dyfi Architecture are Lead Consultants in the upgrading and full restoration of this ten bedroomed Grade 2* Listed Gentry House set within a very substantial rural Welsh Estate dating from 1616. The Hall Glyn Cywarch is noted as 'a major early C17th Gentry House, it's architectural ambition and social status marked in a fusion of regional traditions and renaissance ideas, retaining extensive original interior detail of exceptional quality'.

The 4,200 Acre Estate has been the ancestral seat of the Harlech Family for generations is one of the most significant in Wales. The Estate which is located in Eryri National Park ( https://eryri.gov.wales/ ) has a number of Grade 2* Listed and numerous Grade 2 Listed buildings and structures which are considered highly significant within a whole group setting.

In 2016, Glyn Cywarch Hall was highly dilapidated, with significant damp ingress and collapsed ceilings. It was close to becoming derelict if thorough and immediate action were not taken. An extensive seven-year restoration began, using a sympathetic methodology of traditional materials and master craftspeople, incorporating techniques such as the use of lime plaster. The gatehouse roof was also fully repaired and reslated. Alongside the use of traditional techniques and materials, the thermal insulation of the building was greatly improved, and a renewable heating source in the form of a 200kW water source heat pump was added using latent heat from existing ponds within the grounds.

Working closely with Snowdonia National Park, Cadw and other stakeholders the project includes major extensive sympathetic repairs alongside huge improvements to the thermal performance of the building fabric to reduce energy consumption. The team had to be incredibly careful every step of the way to ensure the restoration was done in a thorough and considerate manner, this is a balanced and creative approach that uses minimum intervention to Historic fabric and yet will provide a comfortable home for today’s requirements and future generations.

We are extremely proud to announce that this project has won the prestigious Historic Houses Restoration Award :
